Frequently Asked Questions

Q) What is a Clean World Movement Environmental Director?
A) An Environmental Director is the person responsible for leading an ongoing environmental campaign in his or her ZIP code or area. In order to become a Director in your area, you must sign-up on the Clean World Movement’s Web site.

Q) What are the responsibilities of an Environmental Director?
A) As an Environmental Director, you will be responsible for organizing and conducting cleanups/activities in your ZIP code or area. This includes selecting areas to be cleaned up, recruiting any volunteers, carrying out cleanups preferably on a weekly basis, disposing of the trash you or your team collects, etc. Because you know the needs of your community better than we do, we give Environmental Directors a wide leeway in managing their operation; they are in control. We do, however, provide Directors with a variety of resources, information and tools to help make their efforts as easy as possible.

Q) Is there an age requirement to join the Movement?
A) No. We welcome people of all ages to participate in the Clean World Movement. However, if you sign-up to be an Environmental Director and are under 18, we require you to complete an Underage Waiver and return it to us prior to conducting your first cleanup/activity. We only require you to complete ONE Waiver, not one before each cleanup/activity. This form is attached to the auto-reply e-mail you receive when you sign-up to become a Director and is available for download on our Web site.

Q) Are any skills required?
A) Not really. All you need is a desire to make the world a cleaner place, the dedication to conduct cleanups/activities once a week or at least several times a month, and a little hard work.

Q) Do I have to be an Environmental Director in order to participate in the Movement?
A) Not necessarily. The environment needs all the help it can get! If being a Director seems like too much responsibility, you can always volunteer for the Director in your area, if applicable. The Movement is about empowering you to make a difference in your community. Whether you’re a Director or not, any effort you make to clean up the environment will be appreciated by your neighbors and Mother Earth.

Q) As an Environmental Director, what kind of support will I receive from the Clean World Movement?
A) We will provide you with a variety of support mechanisms designed to make your efforts as easy as possible. These include a How-To Guide for Environmental Directors, an Activity Report form, a CWM Letterhead template and a CWM I.D. Badge. These files are attached to the auto-reply e-mail you receive when you sign-up and are also available for download on our Web site. In addition, we will provide you with media support (optional) in the form of a press release submitted to your local newspaper(s).

Q) How often do Environmental Directors have to conduct cleanups and how long does each cleanup have to be?
A) Ideally, we would like Environmental Directors to conduct cleanups once a week or at least two or three times every month. Also, there is no set time limit for cleanups. As an Environmental Director, you are in control of every aspect of your efforts.

Q) As an Environmental Director, can I have an assistant in case I’m unavailable to conduct a scheduled cleanup, or to help me recruit volunteers, etc?
A) Of course. Having an assistant Environmental Director to back you up is always a good idea. If you choose to have an assistant, we do not require him/her to become an Environmental Director as you are still in control of your area.

Q) What supplies do I need to conduct a cleanup?

A) You can use whatever supplies you find appropriate to your effort. In most circumstances, trash bags and gloves are all you will need to conduct a cleanup. However, this will vary depending on the cleanup area, the type of litter you’re picking up and other factors. You are responsible for providing any necessary supplies for your activities.

Q) If I become an Environmental Director, how do I recruit volunteers?
A) Recruiting volunteers for your efforts can range from phoning family and friends to posting bulletins in your community to using social networking Web sites to recruit the willing. As a Director, we empower you to recruit volunteers and organize cleanups however you like. The How-To Guide for Environmental Directors, which you will receive when you sign-up, contains helpful tips on how to recruit volunteers.

Q) Can I use the Clean World Movement name to promote events?
A) Of course. You are free to use the name in order to promote your events or the Movement in general. Remember, though, that the Clean World Movement is a project of Planting Peace.

Q) Do cleanup participants need to become Environmental Directors or members of the Movement?
A) No. If you are a participant in a cleanup effort lead by a Director, you do not need to become a member of the Movement nor do you need to submit any information to us. That said, we welcome anyone interested in becoming a member of our team and we are always looking for dedicated people willing to lead a campaign in their area.

Q) Do I need to contact Clean World Movement before or after I conduct a cleanup?
A) Yes. Once you become an Environmental Director, you are technically free to conduct activities in your area at your convenience, but we ask that you contact us both prior to your activity and afterward. Also, feel free to give us frequent updates on your efforts in general; we love hearing from you! Remember to download the Activity Report from the site, fill it out during your function (optional), and send it back to us via e-mail: cwm@plantingpeace.org or fax: 954-239-9642 so we can compile the data. And if you take any pictures or video of your cleanup/activity, please send us electronic copies.

Q) Can I be a Director in more than one ZIP code/area?
A) No. You can only be the Director for one ZIP code. If your location changes, please contact us and we will update your information to match your new ZIP code.

Q) Can a ZIP code have more than one Environmental Director?
A) Yes. The earth needs all the help it can get and we welcome everyone who wishes to join the Clean World Movement. Also, the idea of one person- even with a group of volunteers- cleaning up an entire ZIP code is lunacy.

Q) Can I conduct activities in other ZIP codes/areas?
A) Preferably not. We say this because there may be another Director either currently or in the future who will be in charge of the area(s) you want to have activities in. However, we encourage communication and cooperation between Directors in neighboring areas, should they choose to organize and carry out activities together.

*Even with all this support, our goal is to empower Environmental Directors to organize and carry out activities however they prefer. We will back you up as needed and you can always contact us with any questions or concerns, but the decision-making is ultimately up to you. Thank you for your interest and we hope to add you to our growing list of Environmental Directors.
